Obituary

Vottie Harvey-Davis-Bellamy was born on May 30, 1916 in Halifax County, North Carolina to Alexander Harvey, Sr. and Malvina Williams-Harvey. She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands: Robert Davis and Leroy Bellamy; her daughter: Hazel Davis-Baker; and eight siblings: Jenever, Willie Mae, Roger, Julius, Alexander, Jr., Newborn, Sadie Bell Harvey-Sneed and Mary Harvey-Rogers.

Vottie sought to be closer to God at an early age and became a member of Saint Chapel Baptist Church. She later joined Plumline United Holy Church of God where she served as Mother of the Church for many years, was an Usher, and was President of the Missionary Circle. She was a faithful and devoted member and enjoyed serving the Lord and worshipping at other community churches, especially Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She loved helping people and enjoyed singing her favorite song, "This Little Light of Mine".

Vottie and her first husband, Robert, were blessed with one daughter, Hazel Davis-Baker, whom she dearly loved and missed.

Vottie married Leroy Bellamy on June 12, 1986 and moved with him to his farm where they resided until his death on November 18, 2001. Vottie remained in the home until her health began to fail and she was taken to Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. The staff and her roommate, Miss Lizzie, cared for her and were very fond of her.

After attending elementary school and taking an early interest in business ventures, such as, selling candy, and raising enough money to purchase a camera, she enjoyed taking pictures. She worked as an Assistant Nurse to Dr. Joyner in Enfield, North Carolina; as a Seamstress, and owned and operated her own business, Vottie's Grill on Highway 561 in Halifax County, North Carolina. She was a great cook and was employed for William R. Davis Plantation Restaurant, Enfield, North Carolina for 25 or more years as a cook.

Vottie organized a Boys and Girls Club in Halifax County and won first place for the best uniforms which she handmade from white bleached-out flour sacks.

In the early 1970's, she was recognized for being the first African American Business Woman in Halifax County, North Carolina.

She leaves to reflect on her life, two grandchildren: Albert Baker, Jr. (Christine) of Bogota, NJ and Arnold Baker (Lora) of River Edge, NJ; six great-grandchildren: Elizabeth (Michael) of Seattle, WA, Jorelle, Breelyn, Dakota, Aaron, and Andrew, all of New Jersey; one great-great-grandchild: Jazmyn of Seattle, WA; one faithful son-in-law: Albert Baker, Sr. (Norma); two sisters: Bessie Hawkins-Harris of Enfield, NC and Millie McDonald Patrick of Chester, VA; two sisters-in-law: Ida Price of Bronx, NY and Wezzie Davis of Virginia Beach, VA; a dear and devoted friend: Betty Crowell, her husband, Jabo, and their children and grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good friends.
