Sibyle "Christine" Hardy was born October 9, 1923 in Halifax County, North Carolina. She was the fourth of eight children born to Whit, Jr. and Annie Ashe Hardy. Christine, as she was affectionately known to family and friends spent her early years in the Wayman community and was an active member of the Wayman AME church along with her other siblings. Christine was educated in the Halifax County Public School System and went on to obtain her B.A. degree in Education from Fayetteville State University. Christine spent her later years residing in the Washington, DC area where she worked many years for the Library of Congress. She re-tired in 1989 and remained in the D.C. area until her health began to fail in 2007.
Christine married Willis Hawkins in 1947 and to this union was born her only son, Clarence Lorenzo Hawkins; affectionately known as Hawk. Clarence preceded his mother in death and was laid to rest on Friday July 21, 2002. Christine was also preceded in death by 4 of her brothers; James Q. (Boog), Jesse Dumont, George (Gee) and Earnest Courtland (Court). Christine is survived by two sisters and one brother; Myrtle Wilkins of Richmond, V.A., Marie Wilkins of Enfield, N.C., and Garnesy Hardy (Earline) also of Enfield, N.C. She is the grandmother of two children born to her son Clarence; Cassandra Carter (Robert) of Evans, G.A., and Willis Hawkins of Rocky Mount, N.C. She leaves 4 great grandchildren; Destiny Carter, Quatilla Hawkins, Raqae Hawkins and Dajee Home along with a host of other classmates, relatives and friends. Christine spent her final years residing in Greenville, North Carolina under the watchful care of her niece and nephew; Malcolm and Towanda Wilkins. Malcolm and Towanda proved to be diligent caregivers and through their selflessness Christine was able to live out her final days in peace and comfort. Christine made many new friends in Greenville and became known as "Aunt Christine" to all who knew her. Christine finished her course during the late afternoon hours on August 20, 2008 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina. She had a quiet, peaceful home going and spent her final hours with her niece Towanda by her side.
