Obituary

Selma Lewis, the beloved daughter of the late Missy and Henry Carroll, was
born March 28, 1918 in the town of Enfield, North Carolina. She departed
this life peacefully surrounded by her family at home at the age of 94 on Sunday, August 26,2012 at 3:31am.

Selma attended public school in Enfield, North Carolina and began working
at an early age. In 1936 Selma married her childhood friend, James Lewis
Sr., and from that union they were blessed by God with five lovely children.
James and Selma moved with their first two children to Philadelphia, PA and
became members of Bryant Baptist Church where they served faithfully until
they became members of New Welcome Baptist Church in North
Philadelphia. In 1992 Selma and James followed their Pastor, Bishop Barry
E. Connelly, where they became members of the Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church.

Selma was a dedicated and devoted member of New Welcome Baptist
Church serving as chairman on many church committees, the Senior Choir,
the Deaconess, Mother and Usher Boards. Selma attended church every
Sunday with her signature hats, designer suits & high heeled patent leather
shoes. She worked hard and took her church responsibilities very seriously.
Her commitments to her church duties were a very important part of her life.
Selma worked hard as a seamstress for the Philadelphia Pants Company for
over thirty years but was never too tired to participate in church activities.

Selma was known for her compassion and love of God. During her entire
life Selma was a woman with strong beliefs and believed in God with all of
her heart and soul. She went out of her way to help others and was always
supportive and protective of her family and friends.

Selma enjoyed traveling - visiting the Holy Land, Hawaii, Florida, San
Francisco, and truly enjoyed her first Caribbean cruise at the age of 86. She
loved spending time with her family with her traditional Sunday dinners
complete with her famous lemon and allspice sweet potato pies.

When her husband was diagnosed with kidney failure requiring dialysis
treatment three times a week, Selma retired from her job and became a volunteer in the Asmissions Department of Lankenau Hospital to monitor his care and help others. When her husband passed away, she continued her duties serving in the Admissions Department for twenty years earning a wall plaque that still stands today on the walls at Lankenau Hospital.

Selma leaves to mourn with cherished memories, three children, Mildred R. Opher and son-in-law Thomas Opher, Alice Wright and the late Warren Wright, Sr., and Livian Bishop and a special son, Roland Watkins. Selma also leaves to mourn, 18 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; a specila neice, Esther Solomon; and a host of neices, nephews, cousins and friends.

Selma was preceded in death by her two sons, James Lewis, Jr. and Gus Lewis; and three siblings, Edward Carroll, Arthur Carroll and Henry Carroll.

Sleep on Selma and take your rest, we ALL loved you but God loved you best.

Lovingly Submitted, The Family
