Robert Henry Harper, Jr., son of late Robert Henry Harper, Sr. and Nellie Batchelor Harper, was born December 1, 1923 in Halifax County, NC, the second child in a family of eleven (11) children. He passed away on December 7, 2011 at South Village Nursing Home, Rocky Mount, NC.
"Jack", as he was known by family and friends, was educated in the public schools of Halifax County and served in the United States Navy. He joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age and remained a member for a number of years. He journeyed to the North and lived there for a number of years. Upon returning to North Carolina, he met and married Florine Whitaker and to this union a son was born. Jack's employment was with a number of businesses in the surrounding area before retiring.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Quincy Mullen; two brothers, Arvel Hedgepeth and Darwin Harper.
He leaves to cherish his memories a son, Robert Earl Harper of Salisbury, NC; step children: Tammy Sharpshire of Salisbury, NC, Lonnie Whitaker of Williamsburg, VA, Willie "Ricky" Whitaker, Jr. of Chester, PA; Linda Cuthbertson, Napoleon Whitaker of Miami, FL, Nora Battle of Wilson, NC and Ruth Whitaker of, Salisbury, NC; one brother, Norris C. Harper of Enfield, NC; seven sisters: Claudia H. Brinkley and Harriette H. Ward (Willie) of Enfield, NC, Helen H. Banks of Washington, DC, Patsy H. Woodley of East Orange, NJ, Mary Ann H. Manning of Rocky Mount, NC, Mildred M. Harper of Hollister, NC, and Cynthia H. Harris of Temple Hills, MD; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Robert H. Harper, Jr. 88 passed December 7, 2011 at South Village Nursing Center in Rocky Mount.
Visitation will be 12/9/11 from 5-7pm at the funeral Home.
Service will be 12/10/11, 12noon at Pleasant Grove Church in Hollister Hwy43. Burial will follow in the Harper Family Cemetery.
