Rebecca Pittman Bishop, 96, passed away from this life to be with the Lord on Monday, August 13, 2007 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Rebecca was born on May 23, 1911 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina and later moved to Halifax County, North Carolina where she resided until her death. She was the oldest of seven children born to James and Callie Pittman.
She was preceded in death by her sisters: Geneva Lewis, Mamie McWilliams, and Aime Whitaker and her brothers: Johnnie Pittman, James Henry Pittman and Harrison Pittman.
Rebecca joined St. Paul's Baptist Church at an early age, where she served as a member of the Missionary Circle, Usher Board and Deaconess until her health declined.
She was married to the late James Rayfield Bishop for over seventy years. Although she and her husband had no children of their own, the Lord placed several children in their loving home. The Bishops raised Ollie (Jack) Bishop, who preceded them in death, Ben Bishop, Wilbert Bishop, Linda Pittman Clark and Shanika Pittman.
Rebecca worked as a baker in the school cafeteria at the former Enfield High School from which she retired after twenty-five years of service. Many years after her retirement, members of the community would call and ask that she bake some of her famous rolls, pies or cakes and she would always gladly accommodate their requests.
She leaves to cherish her memory, five nieces: Jeanette Whitaker of Rocky Mount, NC, Willie Mae Barber (Nelson) of Hampton, VA, Linda Pittman Clark (Reggie) of Atlanta, GA, Barbara Jean Rhem (Manolete) of Chicago, IL, and Shanika Pittman of Baltimore, MD; three nephews: Ben Bishop (Ethel) of Brooklyn, NY, Wilbert Bishop (Warnie) of Enfield, NC, and Anthony Pittman (Priscilla) of Fayetteville, NC; sister-in-laws: Mary Hammiel (Ollie) of Enfield, NC and Mamie Gunter of Scotland Neck, NC and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
"Aunt Beck", as she was lovingly called, will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
