The Obituary
"This I declare that He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God and I am trusting Him"
Psalms 91:2
Myra Mae Davis, "Our Heart," was the eleventh child of twelve, born to the late Columbus and Roxanna McWilliams Davis on August 11, 1929 in Halifax County. She departed this earthly home on October 29,2010 at Life Care Hospital of Rocky Mount, North Carolina at 8:35p.m. with family close by her side.
Myra Mae, as she was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Halifax County. She graduated from Eastman High School in 1949. Being reared in a Christian home, Myra Mae joined Saint's Chapel Baptist Church in 1941 where her father served as a Deacon and her grandfather was one of the founding fathers. Myra Mae served in various positions at her church home. She served on the Usher Board, the Kitchen Committee and later in her Christian journey she rededicated her life to Christ by being baptized again. Before going to her eternal home, Myra Mae served on the Mother's Board and the Missionary Board at Greater Saint's Chapel. Her church and her church family were very close to her heart.
Myra Mae was married to the late Chester Hunter, Sr. in 1949. They were blessed with three devoted and loving children: Debra, Donna, and Chester Hunter, Jr. after dissolution of this union, Myra Mae tenaciously became the dad and mother for her children. Her children were her heart. She gave and showed her love to her family unconditionally. Myra was very comical; she had her own way to make you laugh. She was a tender-hearted and loving person. Her affection and love gave her the ability to operate in her gift of assisting others when there was a need. She found great joy in serving others. Although she never obtained her degree in nursing, she was known to many as our "Florence Knightingale." Myra opened her home to many children in the community. She was an absolute delight to be around. She was full of laughter, joy and loved life.
During her life, she was afforded the opportunity to open and manage the "Malibu" with the assistance of her siblings. The Malibu was more than the neighborhood store; Myra Mae made it a gathering place for family, friends, and the entire community "to meet and greet."
Myra Mae found and operated in her gift from God by assisting, caring, and sharing her gentle touch with others. She was an avid fisherwoman. She was fond of the many days she and her sister Dorothy, would spend fishing from sunrise to sunset. She also mastered the kitchen with her delicious recipes and cooking food for her family and others to enjoy. Her cabbage, soup and potato salad were masterpieces; and she always said "the kitchen was hers."
Above all, Myra Mae was a God-fearing woman whose love for God showed in her relationship with others. Her day did not start without her devotional reading of the 91st Psalm, The Daily Bread and her Faith Being completed. And shortly after her devotions, she made early morning phone calls to her friends and cousins, Odessa and Marie.
She enjoyed discussing her readings and her relationship with the Lord. She had a special relationship with all her children and grandchildren. She was the comedian, disciplinarian, sounding board and the greatest friend to each of them.
Myra Mae was the last child of Columbus and Roxanna Davis' twelve children to be with our Lord and Savior. She was preceded in death by brothers, Merman, Earl, Vernal, Montera, Calvin, Matthew, Othello, Jarden, and Bediver; two sisters, Elnora and Dorothy; one precious grandson, Troy Mandett Hunter.
