Mrs. Mamie J. Gunter, whom we affectionately knew as "Mutt", was entered into eternal rest on June 20, 2008 in the comfort of her home.
Mamie J. Gunter was born on November 26, 1927 in Enfield, North Carolina to the late Anliza and Willie Jordan. She was the youngest of eleven siblings.She attended the public schhols of Halifax County, North Carolina. She was married to the late Robert Bishop and to this union three children were born. Then in 1949, she married the late George Washington Gunter and to this union six children were born. One son, McArthur Bishop (Regina) prededed her in death in 2005.
Mamie worked on farms alongside her husband as a sharecropper around the community for many years.
She was employed as a housekeeper for Brett Knox at the Scotfield Country Club in Enfield, NC for many years, and worked in her home babysitting, and later on as an in-home care provider.
Mamie was a caring, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and grandmother to all that knew her. She loved her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews very dearly. She knew how to take a little and make a lot. Mamie was a very independent person who loved to handle her own affairs.She learned to drive at a later age and was able to take care of her errands between Enfield and Scotland Neck without a problem.
She loved to travel, especially to visit her neice, Louise Thomas in Riviera Beach, Florida and her late sister, Della Pittman of Newport News, Virginia. She also loved making quilts and doing word puzzles as her hobbies.
Mamie joined first Baptist church of Enfield, North Carolina at an early age, attending for many years until her health failed her. She continued to serve God always.
Mamie leaves to cherish her memory, five daughters: Mamie Lee Williams of the home; Imogene Gunter of Rocky Mount,NC, Iris Carter (Herbert) of Bakersfield, CA, Amy Terrell (Dexter) of Red Oak, NC, and Mavis Kioko (Julius) of Bowie, MD; three sons: Benjamine Bishop (Ethel) of Brooklyn, NY, Wilbert Bishop (Warnie) of Enfield, NC and Charles Gunter (Jean) of Brooklyn NY; one sister: Lena Mae Mitchell of Whitakers, NC two sisters-in-law: Ethel Mae Jordan of Baltimore, MD and Mary Hammiel of Enfield, NC; 29 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; a very special friend whom she loved as a daughter: Judy F. Whitaker of Enfield, NC and Kathy Richardson of Nashville, NC; two dear friends: Dorothy Whitaker and Undean Debrow; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
