Obituary

Janice L. Whitney passed on Feb. 6, 2021 in Virginia Beach VA. Funeral services will be Tuesday Feb. 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Lea & Pope Funeral Home Chapel Enfield, NC. A Memorial Service will be held Feb. 25, 2021, at 1:00 pm  Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg, PA.

Janice B. Whitney was born on October 28, 1943 in Enfield, North Carolina to James O. Baker and Velda Carrol Baker. She was called to rest on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was a member of Wayman AME Church in Enfield, NC. Janice's strong faith in the Lord sustained her throughout her life. She was a graduate of Eastman High School, in Enfield NC, class of 1961. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Teaching from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in 1966 and earned a Master's degree, with honors, from Kean University, in Union, New Jersey in 1974 where she was inducted into the Phi Delta Kappa honor society for academic high achievement.

Janice started her professional teaching career in Newark, New Jersey in the fall of 1967.  From Newark she transferred to the Jersey City, NJ school system where she worked as a school social worker for over 30 years. Throughout her teaching career she earned numerous accolades and awards. For her demonstrated leadership she was voted as a union representative on several occasions and was a lifelong member of the New Jersey Education Association-National Education Association (NJEA-NEA). During her professional years Janice had several passions; one of them was encouraging higher education for all students and another was coaching High School Track. While coaching the track team at Snyder High School she won many awards and championships and she played an instrumental role in sending several students to the Penn Relays and on to college on track scholarships. Janice was also an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc where she was very involved and participated in the sorority's charitable activities which were responsible for sending many deserving students to college.  An avid sports-woman, Janice enjoyed bowling and bowled competitively with a team up until a year ago.  She also enjoyed supporting NCCU Sports, watching her favorite sports teams compete and listening to Blues music, as well as taking long-distance driving trips across the United States.

Janice Whitney loved nothing more than her family. She was a devoted wife to Timothy Eric Whitney, Jr., Esq.(deceased) for over 40 years.  She was the mother of three children; predeceased by her daughter Jennifer Lee Whitney and survived by two sons; Karl "Tony" Ginyard (Alisa) and Kenneth Avery Ginyard (Belena). She was also the loving stepmother to six children: Therese Blair (Stephen), Timolyn Tillman (Lance), Tama Crawford (Timothy), Tiffany Whitney, Timothy Whitney III and Troy Whitney, Sr. (Sherry). She is survived by five siblings; Barbara Harris (Ray), Marvin Mitchell, Annette Gee (William), William Baker, Blinda Bradley (Irv); by Sisters-in-law Barbara Penn, Carolyn Holmes (Earl), Eleanor Whitney, Marion Whitney and Brother-in-law John Whitney; by her dear Aunts Bernice McWilliams, Earlene Owes, Claytea Newby, and Clementine Ross and by her beloved Uncle Willie Mack Carroll (Elaine). Janice is also survived by a host of grandchildren (19), great grandchildren (17), great-great grandchildren (1), nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many cherished cousins and good friends.
