Obituary
Isaac Prince Fryar, Sr. was born to the late James and Mattie (King) Fryar on November 5, 1927 in Sampson County, NC. He was their first son born of 11 children. He received his education in Sampson County, NC where he attended Garland High School. His job – along with other brothers and sisters - was to work alongside his father as a sharecropper. As such, he was familiar with picking cotton, harvesting tobacco, and growing other crops.
Church life was very important in the Fryar family, so they attended regularly right here at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church – Magnolia, NC. Isaac met his soul-mate, Doris Mae Merritt, at church. He desired to make a better life for himself and expected this could happen if he moved out of the south. He set his sights on the state of New York. On November 18, 1951 Isaac and Doris were married in Dillon, SC; he was 23 and she was 18 years of age. Isaac kept his promise and moved the family to an apple farm in Ulster Park, NY within a couple years. Reaching back to relatives still in the south, he made several journeys back to Sampson County to transport brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, and parents to a better life in New York. Eventually, the family settled in Poughkeepsie, NY where several family members still reside today.
Isaac enjoyed taking family vacations in his "Ford Econoline" camper van. He also had a fondness for dogs and enjoyed playing the guitar. He did carpentry work, loved painting homes, and owned a business called "Isaac's Hobby Shop". Some of his workmanship includes a sun room, garages, tool sheds, dog/bird houses, chair restoration projects, picnic tables, screen houses, and a wooden vanity table set which his daughter cherishes to this day. Isaac and his brother Freddie built his daughter's wedding well and donated it afterward for future couples to use.
During his lifetime, Isaac rendered faithful and dedicated service at Smith Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in Poughkeepsie NY, Talbot Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Pensacola FL, St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Rocky Mount NC and finally Mt. Zion A.M.E. Zion Church. He has served as a Class Leader, Steward and Trustee Board member, church van chauffeur, sung in several male choirs and quartet groups, and was an Honorary Life Member of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. He was a family man with hard work ethics. He retired as a Pressman for Alfa Laval Separator Company in Poughkeepsie, NY after 31 years of service.
Isaac leaves to cherish his memory a wife of 64 years, Doris M. Fryar; sons, Isaac P. Fryar, Jr. of Poughkeepsie, NY; Michael A. Fryar of Van Nuys, CA; daughters, Diane F. Ingram of Fayetteville, NC; Sandra E. Summons and husband Donald of Clinton, MD; brothers, Freddie H. Fryar of Enfield, NC; Leon F. Fryar of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sisters, Gretchen M. Daise and Blondie E. Atily of Poughkeepsie, NY; Cletha M. Bryant and her husband Otha of the Bronx, NY; Patricia Cooper and husband Adrian of Erwin, NC; two grandchildren, Col. Kevin Williams; Danielle Summons, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Edward L. Fryar; Carlie Fryar; sisters, Mary J. Patterson; Lucille Merritt.
