Obituary

Helen J. Hunter was born on May 28, 1939 to the late Earnest Johnson Sr. and Pearlie Jones Johnson in Halifax County, North Carolina. On January 16, 2025 our heavenly father called Helen J. Hunter home to her final resting place.
In addition to her parents Helen J. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, Woodson T. Hunter, a son, Gregory D. Hunter, a daughter Constance H. Battle, sisters Atha Johnson Williams, Mozella Johnson Perry, Ylene Johnson Mitchell, and brothers Earnest Johnson Jr., and James Johnson.


Helen J. Hunter was a 1957 graduate of Inborden High School in Halifax County, NC.
Helen J. Hunter worked for the Halifax County School System for 32 years as a Secretary at Inborden Elementary School in Enfield, North Carolina.


Helen J. Hunter accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and began her spiritual journey at Saint Paul Baptist Church in Enfield, North Carolina under the leadership of Dr. F.L. Bullock. Helen J. Hunter held many positions at Saint Paul Baptist Church to include President of the Senior Choir, Treasurer of the Missionary Ministry and as a Deaconess. She was President of the Deaconess Ministry where she was a faithful member until her health declined. Deaconess Hunter also prepared Saint Paul Baptist Church programs for may years on a weekly basis.
As a devoted Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother Helen J. Hunter leaves cherished memories to her children, Pharise Whitaker (Kenneth) of Enfield, NC, Woodson M. Hunter (Hattie) of Rich Square, NC and Angela D. Hunter of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Bertha Price of Hampton, VA; one sister-in-law, Peggy Johnson of Norfolk, VA; one brother-in-law, Frank Hunter of Enfield, NC; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Paul Baptist Church, 421 S. McDaniel Street, Enfield, North Carolina. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery, 127 Randolph Pines Street, Enfield, North Carolina. There was a Public Viewing one hour prior to the funeral service from 10:00 am - 11:00 am.  Arrangements were handled by Lea and Pope Funeral Home, Enfield, North Carolina.
