Obituary

CLIFFORD TENNY KURTZ entered the world on July 15, 1923 in Jeff Davis County, Georgia, the sixth of nine children born to the late George Kurtz, Sr. and Rochester Woodford Kurtz. He departed this life on February 22, 2008 at The City of Oaks Health & Rehab Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. His formal education began at St. Matthews Elementary School, followed by attendance at Hazlehurst High School, where he completed the eighth grade, the highest level offered at that time. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, he attended Washington High School in Raleigh on the GI Bill, where he earned his high school diploma and learned the bricklaying trade that would support him and his family for many years. In 1953, he married Adarine Buchanan, and using his construction skills, built the house on Spaulding Street where they lived and raised two daughters. At an early age, he was baptized at Kirkland Grove Baptist Church, then upon making Raleigh his home, joined First Cosmopolitan Baptist Church where he was a member for over fifty years, serving on its Usher Board and Laymen's League. His strong work ethic was forged on his father's Georgia farm and led him on a varied career path. In Portsmouth, Virginia, he helped build the battleship "Alabama." He worked as a brick mason in Washington, DC and Raleigh, NC until a back injury forced him into other work. He was a courier for The Supreme Court Library then became a custodian at WRAL-TV where he received the company's first "Employee of the Year" award. He retired from that position in 2003, at age 80, after twenty years of service. Clifford was preceded in death by his wife, Adarine Buchanan Kurtz; three brothers, George, Jr., Anderson, and Andrew; and two sisters, Pieta and Gladys. Those he leaves behind are: his daughters, Shirlita K. McFarland and Felecia K. Gillis; one son-in-law, Timothy W. McFarland; four grandchildren, Timothy K. McFarland, Adrianne M. Gillis, Briana L. McFarland, and Bethany J. Gillis, all of Raleigh; one brother, Wilbur Kurtz (Kitty) of Compton, CA; two sisters, Geraldine K. Matthews (Herbert) of Los Angeles, CA and Inez K. Lindsay of Baltimore, MD; one special sister-in-law, Hazel Buchanan of Raleigh, NC; and a dear friend, Usher Andrew Leach. He also leaves a host of extended family, friends and neighbors who are too numerous to name. Clifford will always be fondly remembered for loving his family, for being a hard worker, for his lifelong hobby of repairing old cars, and for his humble service to anyone who needed his help. Those who knew him well know that he never, ever complained. Although the end of his life was marked by dementia and pain, the Christian faith that was embedded in his spirit allowed him to remember these words: "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see."
