Obituary

Brenda Jones was born March 5, 1959 at Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn, New York to Benjamin and Lucille Jones. She was the youngest of 9 children. Brenda graduated from Midwood High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1977. She attended Hunter College in New York City where she started her undergraduate studies in Journalism and received her graduate degree from Arkansas State University with a Masters degree in Communications. At the time of her untimely death, she was employed as a counselor at the Salvation Army in Brooklyn, New York.

Brenda was a kind and loving person whose mission and passion in life was to serve her fellow man. She was raised in the church from an early age and was baptized as a born again Christian at Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn, NY. It was there that she taught Sunday School for over a decade and became a licensed missionary carrying the word of God to a world in need of salvation.

Besides giving her life to Christ and doing His will, Brenda lived an active and rewarding life. She was an avid athlete, participating in track and field both in high school and college. She ran the New York Marathon and was a prolific reader, lover of the arts, and was considered among her family and friends as an authority in mass communications and the media.

Her life was filled with a sense of mission and fulfillment. She taught school as a substitute teacher, worked as a legal secretary, and contributed to the literary field as a free lance journalist. Her work and life's mission saw her work with: the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center in Bronx, NY; the SafeHorizon for Crime Victims; a Counselor at the Bronx Correctional Center; and, as a counselor at the Battered Women Shelter. Her life was guided by the gracious hand of her creator and who gave her strength to meet the many challenges she faced as an adult.

Brenda was 48 years old at the time she was called to be with her Lord and Father in heaven on May 16, 2007. She was preceded in death by her kind and loving father, Benjamin Jones. She leaves behind her loving mother, Lucille Jones of Raleigh, NC, her sister, Barbara Forster-Jones of La Chaux de-fonds, Switzerland, her brother, Benjamin Jones, Jr. of Angiers, NC, her brother, Elder Raymond Jones of Long Island, NY, her brother, Joseph Jones of Athens, GA, her brother, Elder Earl Jones of Brooklyn, NY, her brother, SgtMaj (ret) Robert Jones of Jacksonville, NC, her sister, Leverne Jones of Raleigh, NC, her sister, Carolyn Coore of New Haven, Conn., her aunt, Eva Govan of Brooklyn, NY, her uncle, Pastor Alton Barnes and aunt Dorothy Lambert-Barnes of New Haven, Conn., many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
