Obituary

Bobby Sledge, son of Silas Taylor and Mamie Sledge was born on October 18, 1941 in Halifax County, N.C.  He joined church at an early age. He had four brothers and one sister who preceded him in death. Bobby departed this life at UNC Nash Rocky Mount, N.C. on June 28, 2024.

He met and married Shirley Raigns Sledge and to this union two children were born: Byron Demetrius and Brian Keith.

Bobby received his education in the Halifax County, N.C School System, graduating from Inborden High School in 1960. He continued his education at Elizabeth City State University receiving a Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education in 1964. He immediately started his career as a teacher and coach at both Eastman and Northwest Halifax High Schools dedicating 30 years of service to public education. He loved basketball, motorcycling, and aspired to be an airplane pilot eventually taking flight lessons at Dillon's Aviation in Greenville, N.C. He was inducted into the Northwest High School and the Halifax County Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2022.  Bobby was well known in the Enfield Community.  He always greeted you with a huge smile on his face.

Bobby leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Shirley Raigns Sledge of Enfield, NC, sons, Byron Demetrius Sledge and Brian Keith Sledge of the home, granddaughter Briana Battle, of Raleigh NC and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Funeral Service was held at 11:00 am at St. Paul Baptist Church, 421 S. McDaniel Street, Enfield, North Carolina. Burial followed in the Cedarview Cemetery, 248 Meyer Street, Enfield, North Carolina. A Public Viewing was held on Friday, July 5, 2024 in the Lea and Pope Funeral Home Chapel, 215 S. McDaniel Street, Enfield, North Carolina  from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
