Mr. Bedvier "Bet" Davis, was the eighth of nine sons of the late Mr. Columbus and Mrs. Roxie Me Williams Davis. Bet was born on August 7, 1927 in Halifax County, Enfield, North Carolina. On Friday morning, December 15, 2006, Bet quietly passed away at Sentara Bayside Hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia and left us all. Eight brothers preceded him in death, Vernal, Herman, Montera, Matthew, Calvin, Earl, Jarden, and Othello Davis. Now they can be together again.
Bet was educated in the public schools of Halifax County. He graduated from Eastman High School in 1949. He joined Saints Chapel Baptist Church at an early age. He along with the rest of his siblings were reared in a loving, caring, Christian home which he exemplified throughout his life. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Bet would be forever blessed by his gentle, soothing and caring personality.
Washington, DC was home for forty-one years. While living in Washington, he met the love of his life, Ms. Doris Evelyn Plummer. They were married in September 1953. They were blessed with one daughter, Felita "Buttons" Davis Kawar and one son, David Davis (the second loves of his life). With his love and compassion for family he extended his home and heart to his nieces: Jackie, Donna H., Carol, Orlean, Saundra, Debra (Dee Dee), and Donna L.
Bet was blessed with many talents. He loved to cook, work in his yard, and occasionally do small home renovations. He was employed by Giant Food, Inc. as the Seafood Manager. Later, he co-owned the Villa Nova Restaurant with two of his brothers, Montera and Earl. This was a successful endeavor and one of the first black owned businesses in the prestigious Capitol Hill section of Washington. Bet also owned and operated his own cab for over ten years.
After retiring, he relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Bet was an active man and lived by the philosophy that hard work never hurt anyone. He eventually decided to go back to work — this time for K-Mart. He truly enjoyed this job because meeting and greeting people made his day. He retired from K-Mart in 2003.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Doris; a daughter, Felita "Buttons" Davis Kawar ( Ibrahim) of Olney, Maryland; one son, David Davis of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two precious granddaughters, Lillyana and Christyana Kawar of Olney, Maryland; three sisters, Elnora Richard of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Dorothy Bryant and Myra M. Davis of Enfield, North Carolina; one special aunt, Mrs. Lovie Hardy of Enfield, North Carolina; many special neices, Orlean Bell Sneed (Julius) of Middleriver, Maryland, Saundra Broadus-Hernandez (Gil) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Debra (Dee Dee) Davis of Washington, D.C., Dr. Donna Hunter of Enfield, North Carolina, Jackie Gayton (Fred) of Rochester, New York, Donna Hite (Gilbert) of Storrs, Connecticut, Carol Proctor (Melvin) of Mitchelville, Maryland; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
(To all my love ones, I bid yon farewell. I ask that yon love much, laugh
often and pray all of the time)
