Algie M. Whitaker, Jr, son of the late Algie M. Whitaker, Sr. and Daisy Elizabeth Hawkins Whitaker, was born in Halifax County, North Carolina on July 25, 1948. He quietly entered into eternal rest on December 15, 2010 at the age of 62.
He attended Halifax County Schools, graduating from the former Eastman High School, Enfield, North Carolina in 1966. He served two years in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970. After leaving service, Algie worked for Waldheim Tire Company in Keary, New Jersey and for Boss-Linco in Carlstadt, New Jersey. His entrepreneurial spirit led him, in 1976, to establish his own business - Whitaker Moving and Express. He operated his business for 34 years (26 years out of New Jersey and 8 years out of North Carolina).
Algie joined Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Enfield, North Carolina at an early age. Upon his return to Enfield, he reunited with his home church. Whenever his schedule allowed, he attended Sunday School, Bible Study, Vacation Bible School, and sang in the Senior Choir; he also served as a Trustee.
He became a member of Bethany Lodge No. 31, F & A.M. - P.H.A., Newark, New Jersey in 1972.
Algie was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mildred Smith on October 5, 1968. To that union five children were born: Jacqueline Louise Whitaker (deceased); Katrina Shirese Whitaker (Gary, NC); Cornelius Whitaker (East Orange, NJ), Nakia Marcus Whitaker (Laurelle) (Hamilton, NJ) and Terome Whitaker (Nicole) (Mount Holly, NJ). In addition to his loving wife and children, he leaves in God's care, seven grandchildren: Dasia Doll Whitaker, Nekayle Marquis Whitaker, Shion Jacob Whitaker, Niah Tyshaianna Brown Whitaker, Nymere Markell Whitaker, Noelle Elizabeth Whitaker, and Kaila Rae Whitaker; one sister, Linda Whitaker Cunningham (Diluth, GA); one brother, James H. Whitaker (Alfreda) (Rocky Mount, NC). He was preceded in death by one sister (Gwendolyn W. Earner) and one brother (Harry D. Whitaker). He also leaves four aunts: Lillie Mae Hawkins Highsmith (Ray), Mary Hawkins Crowell, Dorothy Hawkins Rivers and Alma Hawkins (Curtis Hawkins-recently deceased) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
"Big Al", as he was fondly known, had a hearty laugh and had friends all across the United States. He loved to tell and hear a good joke. He enjoyed having a good time and wanted others to rejoice with him. Rejected or excess shipment of goods was often shared with his church family. Oranges and baby food were among items shared recently. "Big Al" had a big heart.
Condolences are welcome!
